Flow Assurance

  • Refers to ensuring successful andeconomical flow of hydrocarbon stream from reservoir to the point of sale.
  • Flow assurance is extremely diverse, it involves effectively handling many solid deposits, such as, gas hydrates, Asphaltene, wax, scale, mud cake, and naphtenates.
  • These solid deposits can interact with each other and can cause catastrophic blockage formation in pipelines and result in flow assurance failure.
  • Corrosion only compounds the problems in flow assurance.

How is it dealt with

  • For the past seven or eight decades the Oil & Gas industry has been dealing with the flow assurance problems through either chemical or mechanical solutions most of which have proven partially or totally inefficient.
  • Hydration Inhibitors, asphaltenes and wax solvents have had limited impact.
  • Scale, fouling and corrosion inhibitors have failed to resolve scale formation and corrosion to settle in.
  • The net result is that the Oil and gas industry is still looking for THE solution that will resolve the problems.

Flow Assurance Problems

  • Paraffins and asphaltenes are major contributors in slowing the flow of oil. When a crude oil is high in long paraffinic chains, it becomes very viscous and can almost solidify. High asphaltenes content adds to the higher viscosity
  • Scale formation occurs due to heating of underground water with high content of calcium bicarbonate reduced to insoluble calcium carbonate.
  • Microbial Induced Corrosion (MIC), corrosion due to Ammonia, sulfur, CO2 or high content of NaCl in the water.

How is it dealt with

  • The Oil & Gas Industry has very few solutions. Whether mechanical or chemical, the technologies available have left the industry able to recover less than 40% of the proven reserves.
  • The Industry has been spending close to US$ 200 Billion worldwide every year on alternative solutions that have yielded limited or no tangible results.
  • The amounts spent do not take into account the loss of revenue due downtime, and the sometimes catastrophic costs of these problems on the environment and the treasury of these companies.

Flow Assurance

  • The technology behind Osara & Cellozyme E&P is the technology that has formulated the crude oils being produced.
  • We have analysed the behaviour of the bacteria that are shaping everything around us for the past 4.5 billion years.
  • We have used the knowledge acquired to formulate Osara & Cellozyme E&P with the natural bacteria that will address specifically:
  • High paraffin, high asphaltenes content,
  • High pour point, high cloud point.
  • Scale & Fouling elimination and formation
  • Corrosion
  • Hydration
  • NORM reduction and Elimination

How is it dealt with

  • Osara & Cellozyme E&P is formulated with 30 different mother strains of Bacteria. Those have been selected perform the following tasks:
  • Viscosity, pour and cloud points reduction: Breakdown of the long paraffinic carbon chains into smaller ones and Unlock the asphaltenic structures allowing specialised bacteria to break the asphaltenic carbon structures into smaller units. This results in reducing the pour and cloud points and the viscosity down to free flowing status. Osara & Cellozyme E&P will also reduce the wax and asphaltene deposits on the walls of the pipelines.
  • Scale Elimination and Nucleation inhibition: Another group of bacteria will produce a bio- surfactant which will cause the scale to dissolve into the water phase. The bacteria will then form a biofilm on the walls of the pipeline that will inhibit future scale nucleation.

How is it dealt with

  • Corrosion Reduction and elimination: The overwhelming numbers of bacteria in Osara & Cellozyme E&P will compete successfully with the SRB’s and Methanogens in the Oil phase for food. This will result in a competitive exclusion of these SRB’s and methanogens. As a result their numbers will fall well below the level at which they are active. The nutrient that we have formulated for the development of our bacteria also contains Nitrates and phosphorus which are used by the Osara & Cellozyme E&P bacteria to multiply and produce the biochemicals. Prior to their use by the bacteria these nitrates are metabolic toxins for SRB’s and severely inhibit the methanogens. In this process sulphur is not used as an electron receptor, but it will be separated from the hydrocarbon and will become soluble in water. A very small portion will stay in the biomass and will be used by the bacteria for their own intra-cellular processes. The bacteria will also use the biomass of the methanogens as a food source.
  • Hydrates inhibition: Bacteria, in the course of their activity, will produce alcohols that will reduce naturally the freezing point of Osara & Cellozyme E&P, but also contribute to inhibiting hydrates formation. When there is a risk of hydrate formation, we recommend to use either Glycerol or Propylene Glycol. The traditional HI such as ethylene glycol, methanol, and calcium chloride have all proven highly toxic for the bacteria.
  • NORM Elimination: Osara & Cellozyme E&P will eliminate NORM (Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material). The most common NORM are Strontium Sulphate and Radium 226 and 228 which emit Radon. Osara & Cellozyme E&P will initially reduce then completely eliminate NORM from waterlines, heaters treaters, gas dehydrators.
  • Filter Cake Dissolution: Osara & Cellozyme E&P will completely remove the residual mud cake resulting from the drilling operations during completion. It will concurrently dissolve the filter cake, and the near wellbore wax deposition.
